Inspired by the 1997 film Love Jones starring Nia Long and Larenz Tate, Igwebuike of Santa Clara University created an open-mic night for SCU students. What began as a small open-mic night 15 years ago has grown into the largest open-mic forum at Santa Clara. Through music, spoken word, poetry, comedy, dance and many other forms of art students are able to express and appreciate the beauty of art, creativity and diversity. Love Jones enlightens the mind, challenges the soul, soothes the heart and unifies the masses. It is more than a night or an event, it is a movement to celebrate young talent, young minds, and unity through diversity. We invite you to join in the Love Jones experience this year.

ABOUT US

Igwebuike

Founded as the black student union in 1967, and later changing its name to Igwebuike in 1984, our club has provided a source of fellowship and community  for many black students on the Santa Clara University campus. Igwebuike, which translates to “In Unity There Is Strength” aims to unify black students on campus, educate others about our culture and promote social awareness about African-American issues. For 45 years Igwebuike has attracted outstanding black students and has continued to be a source of fellowship and support for the Santa Clara community. Throughout the school year, Igwe organizes many student activities including Love Jones, a student open mic night, Black History Month, which showcases and educates the community about our African-American heritage, as well as various community service and student recruitment events. Our club is comprised of a diverse group of students of various grade levels and majors.
