Along with the history and goals of National Black History Month, Igwebuike will commemorate the month by reflecting on our history at the Santa Clara University campus, educating ourselves and others about our heritage, celebrating the diversity within our communities and discussing solutions for challenges we face in our community.We invite the Santa Clara campus and community to attend the field trips, panel discussions, lectures and social events our club has planned to commemorate the month. February 1, 2013 ift Every Voice and Sing!

Along with tradition we will meet at 9am to sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing”. In previous years, we’ve met inside Benson however, this year we will meet outside of the MCC or on the lawn in front of the Benson fountain.



February 5, 2013 MCC Presents

To participate in the first MCC Presents, Carolyne O. and The Wood will represent Igwebuike with a performance celebrating Black History Month.



February 12, 2013 Dessert and Discussion
7:30PM @ Downstairs Benson

Join us for a historically driven discussion about gun control and the black community. In reference to the current national debate on gun control, a panel of three students and a professor will discuss and debate the effect of gun control on the black community and its historic significance.



February 14, 2013 LOVE JONES: Valentine’s Day Edition
8PM @ Locatelli Center

Single? In a relationship? Just having fun? Spice up your Valentine’s Day with a FREE date! Join us for our quarterly student showcase and open mic night. Love Jones, inspired by the 1997 film starring Nia Long and Larenz Tate, is SCU’s largest student showcase and open mic night. The night will be filled with slam poetry, live bands and much more! You won’t want to miss this Valentine’s Day special.

February 16, 2013 Field Trip Museum of the African Diaspora

Igwebuike LOVES Unity! Of course, it’s the meaning behind our club’s name. On February 16th we are teaming up with the Unity RLC to visit the San Francisco Museum of the African Diaspora to explore the rich heritage and diversity of our African ancestors. During this dynamic field trip we will tour the museum, and attend a performance of the Detroit 67 reading. (Please RSVP by February 8th if you plan to attend, 25 students max)

Join Igwebuike for brunch as we celebrate 46 years of rich history at Santa Clara University.  Current students, alumni, family and friends are all invited to enjoy a memorable brunch, celebration and keynote address by___________.

February 27th Speak Up!

Come and support local high school students as they compete in the Igwe Scholars first Speak Up speech competition. Students will compete for cash prizes in two rounds of public speaking giving a prepared and extemporaneous speech on various Black History Month topics!
